External causes of dry skin – Other factors to consider

Here are a few factors that may be causing your skin to be dry or it may be causing your skin to worsen or just simply not get better.

  • Bathing habits – Long hot showers and baths can cause your skin to dry up by disrupting the natural balance of moisture on your skin. Try switching to cool or lukewarm showers to maintaining your skin’s moisture.
  • Swimming – Constantly swimming in heavily chlorinated water can be another cause. Try applying lotion, oil or sunscreen before swimming.
  • Harsh soaps – some soaps may strip your skin of your natural body oils. You can consider trying soaps with natural ingredients (without harsh chemicals). You can find some here.
  • Weather – Colder weather may dry your skin due to the humidity levels being lower. Keep your body moisturized.
  • Heat – heather and fireplaces also reduce humidity cause your skin to dry.

Dry skin is usually harmless but severe dry skin may cause for your skin to crack and become infected.

The best skin care products for dry skin

This was a small list of some of the best moisturizers for dry skin. The reason they include the hyaloronic acid is also because it can attract up to 1000 times its weight in water. Providing more hydration for your skin. It’s important to remember that the products can help out a great deal but if you don’t consider changing those habits that can dry up your skin then they may not give you the results that you expect or may just work for a small amount of time and not to its full potential.

Not bathing with hot water may be a hard one (it is for me) but for the sake of my skin, I have learned to change my way. Another change I have made has been to drink plenty of water. I got used to carrying a water bottle with me everywhere I can take one and it has changed my skin for the better.

    Hi there,
Thank you for this information. I generally don’t have dry skin, but when it becomes winter time its a different story. I always thought that maybe it’s just the air that causes my dry skin in winter, but after reading your article, I think that my bathing habits may have something to do with it. I had no idea that hot showers would dry up my skin (I love taking hot showers, especially in winter). Although I think it might be hard for me to take a cooler shower, I think I am going to try it out and see if there is any difference.

Also, thank you for recommending THE ORDINARY Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. I love that its vegan and gluten free. Will give this product a try as well.

    Hello Ami,

This was a great post. I have had dry skin since I was very young, and it isn’t fun at all. Even embarrassing at times. Thanks for recommending these products, and for helping me learn a little bit more about dry skin.

  4. Wow, very detailed information! Great website, easy to navigate, not confusing at all. So, I used to use a lot of lotion, as well as chap stick, and face lotion. But, I stopped using all of these products about 3 years ago. I was ADDICTED to chap stick, if I didn’t apply any, my lips would FEEL chapped in a manner of hours (although they really weren’t). I do use coconut oil on my face and sometimes my hair (by the way, if you swish coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes per day, it whitens your teeth and is even said to kill cavities). What led me to do this in a nutshell was when I discovered certain things about the ingredients that are put into these products that are actually harmful to our health. It is a very unfortunate reality. Then I began to ask myself what they did “back in the day” for these types of issues, and the remedy is natural cures. Such as coconut oil swishing (they also did not have NEARLY the tooth problems we have today due to the fact that they did not have refined processed sugar in ANY of their foods).
Anyway, that’s my soap box, lol, thank you for posting such a detailed, informative article, and your website navigation is amazing!

    1. Hi, thank you so much for your comment. Some chapstick do include some ingredients that make you crave using them or even worse, they dry up your lips. That’s why it’s always best to verify the ingredients or even the brand that sell each and every item you use. It might be somewhat annoying to do at first but it’s all worth it in the long run. Thanks for your input!
